Whilst en route from Mars to the Moon, the freighter Daedalus suffers an inexplicable computer malfunction and veers off course; the two crewmen are unable to use the navigation controls, and with their air supply running out, will die before a rescue mission can reach them. While attempting to investigate the mystery, David Theroux discovers that the freighter is carrying an additional cargo: experimental cryogenic equipment. Back on Earth, international unrest is caused when the United States refuses to grant an inspection of their new, unmanned space station, which is believed to have a military objective. Meanwhile, Nathan Spring learns that his girlfriend Lee Jones has been found murdered in his apartment; he returns to Earth and finds that the case is being handled by an obnoxious police inspector named Colin Devis, whose investigation is hampered due to lack of a motive. Spring's remorse is soon turned to confusion when he then receives a threatening phone call from Lee's killer...
